As part of the restoration of Gallery 15, we were commissioned to supply a classic set of stanchions and a picture hanging system that aesthetically complements the long-awaited rehang of this gallery. Our involvement was crucial in the intricate installation process of the picture hanging system, requiring close collaboration with structural engineers to achieve the desired finish while preserving structural integrity.

About Tate Britain
Tate Britain, known from 1897 to 1932 as the National Gallery of British Art and from 1932 to 2000 as the Tate Gallery, is an art museum on Millbank in the City of Westminster in London, England. It is part of the Tate network of galleries in England, with Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. It is the oldest gallery in the network, having opened in 1897. It houses a substantial collection of the art of the United Kingdom since Tudor times, and in particular has large holdings of the works of J. M. W. Turner, who bequeathed all his own collection to the nation. It is one of the largest museums in the country.
The Project
Objectives:
The objective was to prepare for a highly anticipated rehang, necessitating traditional stanchions and a robust picture hanging system. This project came to us on the recommendation of The National Gallery and Tate Britain’s art hangers.
AEC worked directly with the client and alongside the structural engineers and building contractors to help get this project across the line.
Client Requirements and our solution
As the entire gallery was being refitted, and a considerable amount of additional artwork was being hung on the walls, the walls had to be strengthened to support the additional loads. We collaborated with the structural engineer to help strengthen the walls.
The existing walls comprised masonry and steel beams supporting MDF boards. Sections of the MDF were removed so we could gain access to the structural steel beams behind. We then manufactured brackets that we fixed to the masonry using resin fix bolts to provide additional support to the structural beams. The MDF boards were then re-fitted and made good.
We created a bespoke picture hanging system that was fixed directly to the structural beam, sandwiching the MDF. This created a strong and durable system that aesthetically fitted with the client’s requirements.
After the entire system was installed, we conducted a load test to verify that all wall fixings could support the required weight.
Once all the artwork was hung, we proceeded to install the stanchions and ropes to finalise the room.
Collaboration
During this process we had to work with the building contractors to advise where to remove the MDF and ensure that we were available at the required times to complete our work around other works happening in the gallery. We also had to work closely with the structural engineer to ensure that all parties needs were satisfied.
Throughout this process, we collaborated with the building contractors, providing guidance on MDF removal and coordinating our work with other activities in the gallery. We also had to work closely with the structural engineer to ensure that all parties needs were satisfied.
